Pozitive Kidz ... are Happy Kidz

Boy with Thumbs Up Sign

For Prep to Grade 6

(Back to Student Programs)

A new way to help children build self-esteem, confidence and self-control.

This is an activity-based programme that incorporates humour, games and specific Tai Chi skills (philosophy - non-religious, exercises and meditation).

Children learn how to control their anger, be more tolerant and develop more positive relationships with their peers and teachers.

All skills taught have practical application in the classroom.

They help students to direct their energy in positive and constructive ways, and will assist teachers to be more effective in managing classroom behaviour.

As a class teacher, I really enjoyed watching the way you interacted with the children and engaged their interest and enthusiasm for fun. In a word, the children had fun! But there was a serious side ... The children really concentrated on the task that you had set. The pace of the lessons was just right for Preps as it moved quickly. I expected that some children would have difficulty with the meditation at the end. They were the same children who have difficulty concentrating or being still for even a small amount of time. It has also given me teaching strategies to use daily. We often start a new session with a calming pose and I am able to talk freely about angry and scared feelings and know that the children know what I mean.

My group were really positive about the Tai Chi session. The majority felt that the breathing and slow movements helped them relax and could see how the techniques would be useful in stressful or high anxiety situations. Many talked about how it wasn't what they originally expected and they were pleasantly surprised.
(Kate Roberts, Year 5/6 teacher)

My grade loved it and all wanted a copy of the exercises. I thought it was very worthwhile and would like to make it a regular event.
(Lyn Dennis, Year 5/6 teacher)

... the Tai Chi session was great. The students were engaged due to its uniqueness and relationship to martial arts. Chris was fantastic. I think a great time was had by all.

We had a meeting of year co-ordinators last Wednesday and the feedback was very good, especially from the Year 6 teachers ..... the overwhelming feeling was that your activity really fitted in well with the Values Week goals. Thank you for linking into that. Your calm manner was also commented on and the way you managed the students was great. Thank you for being part of our very special week.

I didn't get a chance to thank you after the 4 sessions you ran today, so thank you! The response from the kids was very, very positive. They really enjoyed it and have all learnt some great techniques for relaxing their minds. We will be recommending you to those who ask - thank you again.

Thank you for running Tai Chi for Level 2. It fitted in well with our Unit of Inquiry 'We Are Balanced' and the children responded enthusiastically to each session. The four Tai Chi movements that you taught helped the students to learn about being focused, relaxed and calm. They have enjoyed applying these moves in the classroom, when they need to settle, ready for learning.

Chris' Tai Chi workshops were interactive, engaging and fun. Our grade 5/6 students participated enthusiastically and were able to take away from the session some basic, but effective strategies to help them deal with everyday life. In follow up lessons our teachers were able to discuss, outline and articulate situations that these exercises may be useful.
