Avoiding Complacency
Woman with Feet on Desk

In any business it's important to stay vibrant - to keep moving forward with energy and innovation.

At first this is easier; when starting out, most business owners drive things forward energetically. Later, when the business is established and things are jogging along nicely, that energy can fade.

It's great to feel comfortable and enjoy the success that all your hard work has achieved. But these days no business, however successful, can afford to rest on its laurels for long!

This month we focus on tips and resources to help you avoid the trap of complacency so your business can survive - and thrive.

She'll Be Right
Man making OK circle with fingers

by Chris Bennett

Complacency can destroy a business. If you hear yourself saying the Aussie phrase 'she'll be right' too many times you're in danger of becoming complacent and you could be heading for failure.

Here is how to avoid complacency and stop it from putting you out of business.

Watch For Signs

If you haven't made any changes - taken a risk - or tried anything new in your business within the last six months, then you're in danger of becoming complacent. If you find yourself running on 'auto-pilot' too much of the time, this is another bad sign. These things can show complacency setting in - and you need to take action to shake it off.

Set New Challenges

Any challenge that gets you excited will stop complacency in its tracks. It keeps your mind alert and focused. For example you could challenge yourself to find a new market, create a new product or service, or develop a better customer service system.

Positive Outlook

A positive outlook in your business will definitely help. Creating a positive outlook and then staying positive is hard work but it does help you avoid complacency. Focusing on possibilities rather than impossibilities is a good way of staying positive.

If you are proactive and always looking for ways of doing better in your business then 'she'll be right.'
