Different Generations at Work

One of the challenges in business today can be understanding and working with people from very different generations. Carpenter and Apprentice

For example you may be a 'baby boomer' dealing with a much younger staff, or a "Gen-Xer" whose business sells products to older generations of customers.

Understanding how different generations view the world, think and behave is often crucial for success in business.

This month we focus on tips, resources and articles to help you deal with generational differences at work.

We hope you will find them interesting and useful.

In My Day
by Chris Bennett

In my day there were only two generations, the oldies and the youngies.

Nowadays we have several descriptions of generations and it is important to understand who they are and what they want if we are to succeed in business.

The four main generations at work are:

    Boomers – born 1946-1964
    Generation X – born 1965-1979
    Generation Y – born 1980-1994
    Generation Z – born 1995-2009

There are differences in these generations in the way they think and behave. And understanding these differences will help you determine your marketing and sales strategy.

Just as important are the similarities the different generations have. People are people. Most of us want to create a happy and productive life.

How can you better understand the differences and the similarities of these generations?

Accept
Accept that there are different generations who do not think and behave the way you do. Take the time to learn about and understand the differences.

Create
Create an open mind. Being open to new ways of thinking creates opportunities. A closed mind creates a closed business.

Talk
Talk to people from the different generations and find out how they think and what they want. Do this and you will learn their wants and needs, keep your staff happy and productive and gain more customers.

ACT now and your business will thrive.
