I.T. drives me crazy.
It really does.
I am talking about the Information Technology techies who speak in forked tongues.
Let me explain what happened to me recently.
I asked a web designer (a techie) about a website and this is the response I received.
'Our websites are all fully Content Management Systems housed on remote Unix servers and database driven using SQL.'
This is what I heard:
Our websites are all fully blah blah blah housed on a remote blah blah and database driven using blah.
Now that's a lot of blahs for a simple-minded chap like myself when it comes to understanding technical aspects regarding computers.
My level of understanding about computers is you plug them in, switch them on and they solve all your problems.
So what am I on about?
It just drives me crazy when techies talk in a language that is only understandable to other techies.
My point, besides having a good old whinge (ah, I am feeling better as I write this) is that if you want me as a client, talk to me in a language I can understand.
Try the English language.
Avoid the blah blah blah stuff that only impresses other techies and usually drives away potential clients because they don't understand what you are talking about.
So to all the techies in computer land, here are my H.E.L.P tips for gaining clients instead of driving them crazy.
Hold your horses
Explain in basic terms so I can understand
Listen to me
Provide me with enough time so I can absorb the information
H.E.L.P me, and you may have a client.
