A Healthy, Happy Hive
Beehive

As everyone in business knows, being successful involves more than just providing quality products and services.

Other things also make a big difference for customers who choose to deal with you.

The main foundation is you, including your values and how these are reflected in all aspects of your business.

Also very important are your people - staff or sub-contractors.

And all successful businesses have effective systems and supports in place for their people. For example:

  • Good recruitment processes and clear expectations
  • Effective monitoring and motivation strategies
  • A positive (and safe) working environment
  • Appropriate recognition and rewards

In our recent workshop A Healthy, Happy Hive: Getting and Keeping the Right People, we focused on what it takes to attract and keep the right staff, suppliers and customers for your business.

In this issue of BJ Biz Buzz News, we have collected a range of web-based resources and articles related to this topic. We hope you will find helpful information among them for your own business.

Cheers

What do you believe in? Do you have any values?

Bee on Flower

Of course you do.

Do the values you have reflect your business values?

When we started BJ Biz Buzz, we decided that a critical factor for us to be successful was to draw up a list of values we believe in and enact those values in our business dealings.

How can you determine your values?

  1. Define what the term values means to you. The Oxford dictionary defines values as a principle, standard or quality considered worthwhile or desirable.

  2. Select the personal values that also reflect your business values. For example, you can download this Core Values List to get you started.

  3. Promote your values in plain language. Try to avoid the 'mission statement' jargon you often see that looks good but means very little.

  4. Make sure you enact your values with every business transaction. In other words, actions speaker louder than words. You will be judged on what you do rather than what you say. This will determine your business reputation and your profitability.
Remember, there is a U in values and you are the greatest asset to your business, not just your services or products.
